Segments and Matches (in order)

Segment 1 – Opening Video / Steve Austin Arrival

The show opened with highlights from the prior Smackdown. Steve Austin arrived at the building and was intercepted by referee Earl Hebner, who told Austin that Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley wanted to see him in her office.

Segment 2 – Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler Intro

JR and Lawler announced a mini-tournament to determine a #1 contender for the WWF Championship: The Rock vs. Kane and the Undertaker vs. Rikishi, with the winners meeting on Smacdkown, and the Smackdown winner receiving a title shot against Kurt Angle on the following Raw.

Match 1 – The Undertaker vs. Rikishi

Type: Singles — #1 (#2) Contender’s Qualifying Match
Duration: 4:58

Winner: The Undertaker (via DDT → pinball)

Rikishi was hesitant to enter the ring and stalled on the stage. The Undertaker rode up the ramp on his motorcycle to bring Rikishi back to ringside. Both men brawled on the ramp before entering the ring. Rikishi controlled portions of the match, landing a belly-to-belly duplex and a missile leg drop to Taker’s chest. The Undertaker attempted a Last Ride but could not execute it due to sore ribs. Taker won with a DDT for the 3-count. The Rock and Kane were both shown watching from backstage.

Segment 3 – Austin and Stephanie Backstage (Beer Vendor)

Steve Austin entered Stephanie’s office expecting to discuss his title shot. Stephanie revealed a table of beer and a hot dog vendor and informed Austin that as per his WWF contract, he had to sell every ounce of beer and all the hot dogs before he’d be considered for a title match. Austin beat up the vendor after the vendor tapped him on the chest.

Segment 4 – Kurt Angle, Edge and Christian Arrival Interview

Jonathan Coachman interviewed Kurt Angle, Edge, and Christian backstage upon their arrival. Coachman informed them of the two qualifying matches and the forthcoming Smackdown main event. Upon learning that Undertaker already won, Angle became visibly worried. He also learned that Edge, Christian, and Angle were booked in a tables match against the Dudley Boyz and Chris Jericho.

Match 2 – “The One” Billy Gunn and The Acolytes (Bradshaw and Faarooq) (w. Jacqueline) vs. Val Venus, Bull Buchanan and The Goodfather (w. Steven Richard’s and Ivory)

Type: Six-man Tag Team Match
Duration: 4:16

Winner: Billy Gunn and The Acolytes (Billy Gunn pinned Val Venice’s via cobra clutch slam)

All six men brawled at the opening bell. Bradshaw worked Buchanan early before tagging Faarooq. The Acolytes hit a double neck breaker on Buchanan. Billy Gunn later came in and squared off with Val Venus. Venus missed a middle-rope elbow drop. The Acolytes cleared Buchanan and Goodfather to the floor. Billy Gunn hit a cobra clutch slam on Val Venus for the pin. After the bell, Billy set Venus up for the piledriver but Steven Richard’s distracted him and Venis escaped.

Segment 5 – Mustard Segment (Austin and Stephanie)

Stephanie confronted Austin backstage about eating and drinking his profits. Austin claimed a problem with his mustard bottle, then squirted mustard all over Stephanie’s silk blouse. Stephenie fled to her office screaming.

Segment 6 – Stone Cold Drinking

Stone Cold is shown backstage with his beer tray. He pours several Budweisers into cups and tastes each one.

Segment 7 – Stephanie/Vince Phone Call and Trish Stratus Visit

Stephanie was on the phone ranting to Vince about Austin ruining her blouse. Trish Stratus entered to speak with Stephanie. Vince announced over the phone that Chris Benoit was to defend the Intercontinental Championship against Test. The call ended. Stephanie then warned Trish that there was only room for one dominant female in the McMahon family.

Segment 8 – Dudley Boyz Interview (Backstage with Michael Cole)

Michael Cole interviewed the Dudley Boys about their upcoming six-man tables match against Kurt Angle, Edge, and Christian. D-von spoke. Bubba Ray revealed a table with “Edge, Christian, and Kurt” spray-painted on it.

Match 3 – WWF Hardcore Championship: Raven (C) vs. Tazz

Type: Hardcore Match (falls count anywhere, 24/7 rule in effect)
Duration: 2:27

Winner: Raven (retained WWF Hardcore Championship, pinned Crash Holly)

Raven entered with his shopping cart of weapons and cut a prompt on the mic declaring it “The Year of the Raven” Tazz came out and Raven attacked him on the apron with a trash can lid. Raven slipped a rope with a noose around Tazz’s neck and tossed him over the barrier into the crowed. The match continued into the back. Tazz applied the Tazzmission but Raven escaped with a low blow. Both men brawled into the woman’s restroom where Tazz gave Raven a swirlie in a toilet. The Holly family (Hardcore Holly, Crash Holly, Molly Holly) and Steve Blackman appeared in the brawl. Raven broke a 2×4 over Crash Holly’s head and pinned Crash for a 3-count to retain. After the match, Hardcore Holly and Steve Blackman chased Raven but began fighting each other, allowing Raven to escape.

Segment 9 – Austin In-Ring Promo / Stephanie Confrontation (Beer Tray)

Austin came to the ring with the empty beer tray. He claimed to have sold all the beer and hot dogs. Stephanie came out and challenged his sales. Austin showed footage on the TitanTron of the Acolytes and Jacqueline consuming the products they had purchased from him. Austin hung the empty tray around Stephanie’s neck and demands his title shot. Stephanie announced Austin would face William Regal, with the winner added to a three-way #1 contender’s match on Smackdown. During a confrontation.

Match 4 – The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray and D-Von) and Chris Jericho vs. Kurt Angle, Edge, and Christian

Type: Six-Man Tables Match
Duration: 5:13

Winner: The Dudley Boyz and Chris Jericho (Edge was put through a table via 3-D from the Dudley Boyz)

The match began with all six men brawling. The match attempted tag-team rules despite being a tables match. Jericho locked Angle in the Walls of Jericho mid-match, but submissions do not win a tables match. Edge and Christian repeatedly moved the table to prevent eliminations. The Dudleys hit the “Wassup” head butt on Angle. The finish came when the Dudleys hit Edge with a 3-D through their table for the win. Christian tended to Edge, who remained in the table wreckage

Segment 10 – Test and Trish Stratus Backstage

Trish Stratus visited Test as he prepared for his match. Test was hostile toward her, citing rumors about her and Vince McMahon. Test told Trish he wanted a match with Albert. Trish denied involvement with Vince or Albert and encouraged Test to focus on winning the Intercontinental Title. Trish offered to raise his hand after he won. Test headed out with Trish accompanying him.

Segment 11 – JR/Lawler Announce XFL Ticket Sale Info

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler announced that tickets for the first XFL game would go on sale that Saturday.

Match 5 – WWF Intercontinental Championship: Chris Benoit (C) vs. Test (w/Trish Stratus)

Type: Singles Championship Match
Duration: 4:42

Winner: Chris Benoit (retained via pinball after Trish Stratus shoved Test off the top rope)

Benoit attacked Test immediately. Test hit a Full Nelson slam and a gut wrench powerbomb. Benoit attempted the Crossface but Test grabbed the ropes. Benoit hit a back duplex and a back breaker. Albert appeared at ringside mid-match. Test dove off the ropes to attack Albert and threw him into the steps. Back in the ring, as Test climbed to the top rope, Trish Stratus shoved Test off the turnbuckle. Benoit covered the fallen Test for the 3-count. After the match, Albert attacked Test and the two brawled with referees intervening.

Segment 12 – William Regal Leaving Stephanie’s Office

Footage aired of William Regal leaving Stephanie McMahon’s office during the commercial break with a smile on his face.

Match 6 – The Hardy Boyz (Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy) (w. Lisa) vs. Kaientai (Taka Michinoku and Funaki)

Type: Tag Team Match

Winner: The Hardy Boz (Jeff Hardy pinned Funaki via Stanton Bomb after Matt Hardy hit Funaki with the Twist of Fate)

Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn, and Terri came out and joined the commentary table for the next match. Malenko wore the head seat while Saturn and Terri sat nearby.

Malenko commented on Matt Hardy at commentary, saying he had shown he could beat Matt in the ring and if Matt wanted to fight for Lita’s affection, so be it. Taka attacked Matt from behind to open the match. The Hardys hit a wheelbarrow duplex early. Jeff hit a clothesline on Funaki off the floor, using the barricade. Taka hit an Asia moonsault on the floor. Kaientai controlled Jeff with a camel clutch and a Taka dropkick to his face. Jeff came back with a jawbreaker and tagged Matt. Near the finish, Jeff attempted a dive from the apron but slipped and straddled the turnbuckle before falling forward to the floor. Matt hit the Twist of Fate on Funaki; Jeff recovered and hit the Stanton Bomb for the pin. After the match, Lita lured Malenko away from the announcers table. Matt attacked him from behind, Jeff dove through the ropes onto Saturn, and Lita threw Terri to the floor.

Match 7 – The Rock vs. Kane

Type: Singles — #! Contender’s Qualifying Match
Duration: 9:09

Winner: Kane (via chokeslam, pinfall, following interference by Kurt Angle)

Rock rushed the ring immediately. Kane hit a sidewalk slam early. Rock threw Kane over the ropes and they brawled on the floor. Kane slammed Rock on the concrete and slammed him over the barricade into the crowd. Back in the ring, Kane hit a flying clothesline from the top rope for a near fall and a powerslam. Rock hit a Samoan Drop but was too hurt to cover. Rock hit a DDT for a two count. Kurt Angle came down the ramp during the match. Kane clotheslined Rock over the ropes and Angle moved in, but Rock hit Angle with a Rock Bottom on the floor. Rock reentered the ring, hit a spinebuster on Kane, and attempted the People’s Elbow, but Kane rose and went for a chokeslam. Rock fought out and knocked Kane over the ropes with a right hand, then threw him back in. Angle re-entered and struck Rock from behind with the WWF title belt. Angle rolled Rock back in and Kane finished Rock with the chokeslam for the three-count. Kane advanced to the Smackdown contender’s match.

Segment 13 – Angle Flees in Getaway Car (Edge and Christian) / Replay of Kane Winning

Footage aired of Kurt Angle fleeing the arena in a car driven by Edge and Christian. A replay of Angle’s interference in the Rock vs. Kane match aired. JR announced that Angle’s title challenger next week would be one of Undertaker, Kane, Steve Austin, or William Regal.

Segment 14 — William Regal In-Ring Promo / Stephanie Revealed as Special Referee

William Regal came to the ring and cut a promo on Steve Austin. Regal then introduced the special guest referee: Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, who came out wearing a referee shirt.

Match 8 – Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. William Regal (WWF European Championship)

Type: Singles — #1 Contender’s Qualifying Match (Special Referee: Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley; Earl Hebner ran in late as secondary referee)
Duration: 5:25

Winner: William Regal (via roll-up with tights grabbed; fast count by Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley)

Austin immediately confronted Stephanie before attacking Regal with a clothesline. Austin hit a Thesz Press, stomped Regal in the chest, and rammed him repeatedly into a turnbuckle. Austin repeatedly tossed Regal to the floor and brawled with him around ringside, with Stephanie repeatedly demanding the action stay in the ring. Austin flipped off Stephanie. Austin hit three consecutive snap suplexes. Austin covered Regal and Stephanie stopped her count at two, claiming something was in her eye. Austin responded by booting Stephanie through the ropes to the floor. Earl Hebner ran in to replace her as referee. Regal got back up and hit Austin below the belt. Regal knocked Hebner through the ropes and helped Stephanie back into the ring. Austin hit a spinebuster and covered Regal, but Stephanie again claimed an eye problem. Austin grabbed Stephanie by the hair; Regal rolled Austin up and grabbed his tights as Stephanie made a fast three-count. Regal won and advanced to the Smackdown three-way contender’s match. After the match, Stephanie grabbed a mic and declared Regal the winner. Regal improved to 2-0 over Austin in consecutive weeks.
